The Holly and the Ivy

The Holly and the Ivy ist ein Weihnachtslied, von dem zahllose Fassungen existieren. Es ist seit Anfang des 19. Jahrhundert bekannt. Am bekanntesten ist die Version von Cecil Sharp aus dem Jahr 1911.
Das Weihnachtslied beschreibt die englischen Weihnachtssymbole Efeu (Ivy) und Stechpalme (Holly), die seit dem 15. Jahrhundert in England als Weihnachtsdeko (Christmas Decorations) genutzt werden.

The holly and the ivy,
now are both well grown,
Of all the trees that are in the wood,
the holly bears the crown.

Oh, the rising of the sun
and the running of the deer,
The playing of the merry organ,
sweet singing in the choir.
The holly bears a blossom
as white as lily flower,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ
to be our sweet saviour

Erklärungen
Während der grüne Efeu (Ivy) für das unvergängliche Leben steht, stellt die Stechpalme mit ihren stachligen Blättern und roten Beeren (Berries) die blutige Dornenkrone von Jesus dar.
