    Englische Weihnachtslieder (Christmas Carols) werden in der Vorweihnachtszeit nicht nur im Kreis der Familie und in der Kirche gesungen, sondern auch im kleinen Chor auf der Straße oder anderen öffentlichen Plätzen. Bei diesem sogenannten Carol Singing werden meist Spenden für Wohltätigkeit (Charity)gesammelt.


    Carols waren ursprünglich Lieder, die in vorchristlichen Zeiten zur Wintersonnenwende (22. Dezember) beim Tanzen um einen Stein gesungen wurden. Das unter Franz von Assisi Anfang des 13. Jahrhundert in Italien entstandene Krippenspiel, das in einer dramatischen Aufführung die Weihnachtsgeschichte in der Landessprache nacherzählt und mit Weihnachtsliedern untermalt, wurde auch in England bekannt. Das Krippenspiel (Nativity Play) wird heute v.a. in Schulen aufgeführt. Es entstanden erste englische Weihnachtslieder, die jedoch unter Oliver Cromwell (1647, Englischer Bürgerkrieg) - wie das ganze Feiern von Weihnachten - verboten wurden. Viele Christmas Carols wurden jedoch von der Bevölkerung heimlich gesungen und überliefert.


    Erst seit dem Viktorianischen Zeitalter (Victorian Age) werden zu Weihnachten wieder öffentlich englische Weihnachtslieder gesungen. Neben traditionellen Christmas Carols wurden schnell auch neu verfaßte Weihnachtslieder beliebt (z.B. Good King Wenceslas). Zudem entstand das Carol Singing, bei dem in der Vorweihnachtszeit von kleinen Laiensänger-Gruppen auf der Straße Weihnachtslieder gesungen werden. Dabei werden oft Spenden für Wohltätigkeit (Charity) gesammelt.
